Working meeting of the Association of Constitutional Justice of the Countries of the Baltic and Black Sea Regions (BBCJ)

On September 11, 2017, within the framework of the 4th Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice “The Rule of Law and Constitutional Justice in the Modern World”, a working meeting of the Association of Constitutional Justice of the Countries of the Baltic and Black Sea Regions (BBCJ) was held in Vilnius, Republic of Lithuania.

Representatives of the Constitutional Courts of Georgia, the Republic of Lithuania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine took part in the meeting. The delegation of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, which this year presides over the Association, was composed of Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Viktor Kryvenko, Judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Ihor Slidenko and Stanislav Shevchuk.

During the meeting, the Association members discussed preparatory meeting of the Vilnius Forum (forum of the Constitutional Courts of the Republic of Lithuania, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine), within the framework of which a meeting with the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė is to be held, as well as participation in events on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania. The event will be held at the end of October in Vilnius.

The discussion of the draft amendments to the Statute of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice was also among the issues touched upon during the meeting. In particular, the replacement of three elected representatives of the Bureau of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice by four representatives elected from each continent and only within the framework of these groups. The possibility of nominating candidates to the Bureau of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice from the Association of Constitutional Justice of the Countries of the Baltic and Black Sea Regions was discussed.

In addition, non-participation of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation in the Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice was deliberated.

The participants of the meeting expressed their hope for further fruitful cooperation on the issues of establishing the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution, observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, guaranteeing democratic values, respect for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
